The activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS), Chittagong University (CU) unit, again hurled crude bombs at a CU shuttle train on the seventh day of the indefinite general strike on Saturday.
A group of unruly students hurled nearly 10 handmade bombs at a CU-bound shuttle train at Chowdhury Hat and Aman Bazar areas round 9 am, said Mohammad Kamal Uddin, Sub-Inspector (SI) of Hathazari thana.
However, there was no report of any casualty and injury, the SI added.
Campus sources said the presence of students on the campus was thin but regular classes and examinations were held as per schedule.
CU Proctor Siraj-ud-Dowllah said the law and order situation on the campus was normal and additional members of law enforcing agency were deployed on the campus to avoid any untoward incident.
Earlier, the striking students vandalized two teachers’ bus of the university and exploded several crude bombs in the university shuttle trains and at different railway stations to
press home their demands.
Campus sources said CU unit of ICS under the banner of general students called the indefinite general strike on the campus demanding reopening of Suhrawardy Hall and Shah Amanat Hall, which were closed following clashes between ICS and Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists.
Earlier on August 24, police conducted a drive at Shibir dominated Suhrawardy Hall of the university following a clash between ICS and BCL activists and recovered some petrol bombs and stones from the dormitory.
The following day, the university authorities closed the hall for an indefinite period.
Besides, Shah Amanat Hall was shut earlier as police sealed off the Shibir-dominated dormitory following a fierce clash between BCL and ICS activists on January 12 which left a student dead.
CU unit of ICS under the banner of ‘Residential Students of all’ enforced the general strike from August 31 demanding reopening of the two halls.
