‘Crossfire’ only for ‘self-defence’ during drive: Minister

Pointing to the recent gunfights across the country, the Minister for Home Affairs Assaduzzaman Khan Kamal defended the ‘crossfire’ calling it an act of self-defence during the drive against the miscreants.
He again marked the crossfire as ‘gunfight’ between law enforcers and criminals.
The Minister gave with the clarification, while responding to the queries of journalists at his residence on Friday.
“The members of law enforcing agencies, including Police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) men shoot them to death only in self-defence,” the Home boss said.
“We have asked the police to counter attacks on
them. They can open fire immediately for their safety in case of need,” said Assaduzzaman Khan.
According to human rights body Odhiker, at least 73 people were killed in ‘crossfires’ and ‘gunfights’ while the total figure was 2170 since 2014.
In ‘crossfire’, it says that were killed six in January, 10 in February, 11 in March, 7 in April, three in May and 18 in June, the report also mentioned.
According to Ain O Salish Kendra, 210 people were killed in 2004, 377 in 2005, 362 in 2006, 180 in 2007, 175 in 2008, 229 in 2009, 133 in 2010, 100 in 2011, 91 in 2012, 72 in 2013, 128 in 2014 and 183 in 2015.
Until now, policemen at checkpoints and guarding government sites could only fire on the orders of superior officers. In certain circumstances, they needed a magistrate’s permission.
