Crop clinic to be set up at KU

The Khulna University authorities have taken up an initiative to set up a crop clinic at the university for the benefit of the farmers of the south-western coastal region.
The clinic having a website will disseminate information on proper crop management.
Farmers as well as researchers could receive direct technological assistance from it. Diagnosis of various problems and diseases of crops and plants will be made here.
The clinic will provide instant solutions or give prescriptions for any complications of crops or plants if farmers send pictures through internet or take samples of those there.
The above information was disclosed at a daylong workshop on ‘Diagnosis of Plants’ Diseases’ organised by the Agro-technology Department of KU at the academic building on Saturday.
KU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Fayek Uzzaman inaugurated the workshop as the chief guest while Prof Dr Manirul Islam, chairmen of the Agro-technology Department, presided over the programme.
While addressing it, Prof Dr Manirul Islam laid importance on preventing the diseases of plants and crops for ensuring food safety.
It was also told at the workshop that about 10-15 per cent crops were damaged for various infectious diseases every year, causing loss to two months’ food supply of the total population of the country.
The crop clinic is fourth of its kind in Bangladesh but first in the south-western region.
Teachers and researchers of KhulnaUniversity and officials concerned of the Department of Agricultural Extension from Khulna, Satkhira, Bagerhat and Narail, among others, were present on the occasion.
