Wahida Khanam, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Ghoraghat, Dinajpur, who suffered serious injuries in an attack by miscreants, was airlifted from Rangpur to Dhaka by a Bangladesh Air Force helicopter on Thursday afternoon.
After she was brought to Dhaka at 2.15 pm, she was initially admitted to CMH before being transferred to the National Institute of Neuro Sciences & Hospital later, according to Dr Md Badrul Alam, the Joint Director of the hospital.
“Although she is conscious, her condition is still unstable. Upon improvement, we could operate on her brain,” he told media.
Two unknown assailants entered Wahida’s official residence at the Upazila Parishad Campus around 3am on Wednesday, and attacked her and her father Omar Ali, who came to visit her from Naogaon, said Ghoraghat Police OC Amirul Islam.
They beat up UNO Wahida, 35, and her father, Omar Ali, with a hammer, leaving them unconscious. The incident came to light around 10 am when Omar informed the local people about it.
Wahida was initially admitted to Rangpur Community College Hospital’s intensive care unit while her father was admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
Head of Neurosurgery Department of RMCH, Tofayel Ahamed Bhuiyan said that the UNO got the severe injury on the left side of her head. Her right hand and leg were not functioning, he said.
Omar told police that someone broke in through the ventilator shaft of the bathroom at night. When Wahida noticed it, the assailant struck her in the head with a hammer. He suffered the same fate when he rushed to her aid.
Wahida’s husband Mejbahul Hossain is the UNO of Peerganj in Rangpur. The UNO has a four-year-old son.
“Nothing was taken from the UNO’s residence, said OC Amirul Islam adding that police are investigating the incident to see if it was linked to any “personal enmity”.
However, he said police have collected closed circuit television (CCTV) footage from the areas which showed two masked attackers entered the UNO’s house. They were about 30 to 35 years old.
“The night guard who was present at the UNO’s residence during the incident is being questioned,” OC Amirul Islam told The New Nation. Police are looking for the attackers based on the footage.
Locals said a group of miscreants broke into the UNO’s residence around 2:30 am after ‘tying up the night guard’ on the Upazila Parishad premises.
Deputy Commissioner of the district Mahmudul Alam and Superintendent of Police Anwar Hossain visited the spot in the morning.
