Criminalised politics making our young ones criminals and we are helpless

MEMBERS of Rapid Action Battalion on Saturday arrested two activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League’s Dhaka University unit on charge of snatching money from the driver of a sand-laden truck near High Court. Both the detainees Al Amin and Jubayer Ahmed Shanto are second-year students of IER and IR respectively. It is really pathetic seeing two meritorious students of the country’s highest tier University involved in mugging. Everyone knows what types of struggle the students have to face to get admission into Dhaka University but how and why some of them become criminals – it’s a big question. The answer may lie in their involvement with the party politics for exercising power inside the campus and the law enforcers’ reluctance to investigate their crimes due to the culture of impunity as they remain under the ruling party’s patronisation. Earlier, we observed that Chhatra League activists in Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology killed their fellow student Abrar in the dormitory for posting dissent opinions on Facebook.
Definitely all the BUET students are not killers, or the students who emerged as the killers were not criminals before they engaged in the ruling party’s student wing politics. We also can’t forget the murder of Biswajit in the city’s old part or the killing of Jubayer, a Jahangirnagar University student. People also have witnessed the attack on the DUCSU VP Nurul Huq Nur and his followers in broad daylight and also the involvement of a section of students in abduction, kidnapping and running torture cells in the residential halls of the universities. We must say the latest crime of two DU students shouldn’t be treated as an isolated incident and they should be punished for their illegal deeds.
When the total politics has been criminalized with the involvement of police, at that time it will be a foolish thought to keep the students out of crimes; especially those who are involved in the ruling party’s politics.
