A suspected criminal was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police at Gouricharanpur village in Sadar upazila early Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Daud Ali,40, leader
of the criminal gang ‘Tiger Bahini’ and a resident of the same village.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Sudarshon Kumar Roy said on a tip-off, a team of police conducted a drive to arrest members of the gang and recover firearms in the area at about 2:00 am.
Sensing the presence of the police team, Daud and his cohorts who gathered in the area opened fire at them, forcing them to hit back with firing, triggering a gunfight.
Daud was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot while his cohorts managed to flee. Four policemen-sub-inspectors Manik and Mohsin and constables Islamul and Masud Ali-were injured during the gunfight.
They were admitted to Magura Sadar Hospital.
Police recovered the body and sent it to the hospital morgue for an autopsy. Police also recovered three firearms and 21 rounds of bullet from the spot. Daud was wanted in several cases including for murder, terrorism and extortion, Sudarshon Kumar Ray added.
