S.A Shofiee, Sylhet :
As police are occupied with warding off blockade and hartal-related violence, other criminal activities in Sylhet are increasing at an alarming rate, taking advantage of the situation.
A number of criminal activities, from mugging to murder, has been reported throughout Sylhet since the nationwide blockade began last month. Police sources said bombs are blasted almost every night in Sylhet city’s important areas.
Use of illegal weapons have risen too – at least two firearms and 10 rounds of bullets have been recovered in January.
Sources said many of the attacks and murders are related to disputes over drug peddling, establishing dominance over an area, and political reasons.
The situation is causing alarm among the city-dwellers, as police has not been able to make a headway in nabbing the culprits.
