Cricketer Sunny on remand

The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka on Sunday placed cricketer Arafat Sunny on one-day remand in a case filed under the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act.

granted the remand after hearing on a prayer of Yahia, a Sub-Inspector of Mohammadpur Police Station and also the Investigation Officer of the case seeking a five-day remand to interrogate the national cricketer in connection with the allegations made against him.
Based on the allegations of a 23-year-old woman police of Mohammadpur Police Station arrested Sunny from his house in Aminbazar area on the outskirts of the capital on Sunday at about 8 am. Later, he was produced to the CMM Court at around 3 pm.
A senior police official seeking anonymity said a woman said to be married to the cricketer filed the case with Mohammadpur Police Station on 5 January.
She alleged that Sunny had uploaded some of their intimate pictures on social media recently and also threatened her in other ways. The woman claims she and Sunny met seven years ago. They got into relationship and eventually in December 24, last year, they got married without informing their parents.
However, later the both families knew of their marriage, but Sunny kept on buying time before taking her to his house, the case details say. On the other hand, the family of the woman became restless and she asked Sunny either to take her to his house or to arrange for the dissolution their marriage. A police source said when the woman wanted to leave her residence with Sunny, he opened ‘fake’ Facebook account and uploaded her indecent photos.
Arafat Sunny on Sunday claimed innocence in the incident. Meanwhile, court police Md Nizamuddin told newsmen- Metropolitan Magistrates do not have any authority to grant bail in the cases filed under the ICT. However, accused Arafat Sunny may appeal to the Cyber Tribunal for his bail.
Besides, Nargis Akhter, mother of the 30-year-old left-arm bowler Arafat Sunny claimed her son is innocent and the woman has been trying to ‘frame’ him for making money. She also said, the complainant of the case could not show any document of the alleged marriage.
