Rangamati Correspondent :
Barrages built on the creeks running down the hills of the district brought welcome relief to the usual hard living of the population there by providing them with a chance to bring previously fallow lands under farming- raising ducks and cultivating fishes.
The Project Director of CHT Fisheries Development and Expansion Project (3rd phase) and also Rangamati district fisheries officer, Abdul Hannan Miah told this correspondent that the creek barrage method has changed the fate of ultra poor people of the area, who now mostly depend on cultivating fish in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) utilising creeks developed between hills by damming those.
“The government has undertaken the long-term project at a cost of Tk 68.5 crore to develop and expand fish cultivation utilising creek method in the CHT area” the Project Director (PD) added.
Meanwhile, 200 creek barrages have already been built at 25 upazilas under three hill districts of CHT through implementing the project amid supervision of the ministry of fisheries, the PD further said, adding steps have been taken to build 100 more creeks.
While detailing the potentiality of creek method fishing, Abdul Hannan Miah said “It will lessen fish-related pressure on Kaptai Lake and will generate employment opportunity to the marginal people by mitigating water crisis during the dry season. The project is scheduled to be completed by June, 2017, added the PD.
“The creek method fishing is designed in such a way that will obviously benefit CHT people to live a dignified life”, PD further opined, adding a package of opportunities have been waiting for them. The creek barrages are bringing new hopes to the farmers as they have been cultivating fishes and raising ducks in the swelled up water bodies, fulfilling their demand for food for at least two months, he said.
