Former Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique said that credibility is very important for journalism.
“We have to understand which news is news and which is not. We have to publish constructive news which is full of authentic information. For that reason, creditability is a must for journalism,” he said.
He came up with the remarks on Wednesday at the inaugural session of a two-day training programme titled “Sheikh Hasina’s 10 Initiatives and Development Journalism” as the chief guest in the auditorium of Press Institute, Bangladesh (PIB) in the city.
Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha’s infotainment service organised the workshop in collaboration with ‘Amar Bari Amar Khamar (ABAK)’ project of Rural Development and Cooperatives Division of the LGRD and Cooperatives Ministry for the national news agency’s district correspondents.
BSS Managing Director and Chief Editor Abul Kalam Azad presided over the inaugural session of the workshop.
Arefin Siddique said if any news organisation achieves credibility on publishing news, then the concerned organisation will be more trustworthy among the people.
The journalists work for the development of people of the country, he said, adding that, so they should uphold the authentic news highlighting government’s activities and instructions towards the development of the people.
Urging journalists to become confident in their professional career, he said aiming to build up efficiency and skill, confidence is very much needed.
He lauded the initiative of BSS as it is officially supporting journalists to be efficient and confident in their workplace to make constructive as well as better news on Sheikh Hasina’s 10 Initiatives.
Speaking on the occasion, Abul Kalam Azad said that the main objective of the journalists is to ensure welfare of the people.
Under the prudent leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the country is now a role model of development across the globe, he said.
He urged all to supplement the government’s endeavours sincerely so that the country would become the developed one by 2041.
The workshop was part of a series of an interactive training programme on development journalism for district correspondents of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha in phases with media experts and senior journalists, academics and officials appearing as resource persons.
Managing Editor of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha Anisur Rahman, Amar Bari Amar Khamar Project’s Deputy Director Najir Ahmed and noted journalist Nadeem Qadir also spoke at the session.
