Creating employment opportunity, attracting FDI can be game changers

Speakers at a discussion underscored that creating employment opportunities in both private and public sectors, and attracting Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) can be game changers even amid the ongoing coronavirus crisis.
A host of businessmen, ministers, economists, diplomats and an adviser made the observation on Sunday at a virtual meeting of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry. FBCCI President Sheikh Fazle Fahim moderated the meeting.
Eventually, the coronavirus pandemic can turn into an economic opportunity for the country if the proper policies are enacted at the right time, they said.
The businessmen in attendance wanted taxes to be lowered, improvement in the ease of doing business by removing bureaucratic tangles and proper and transparent implementation of the government-announced stimulus packages for different sectors of nearly Tk 1 lakh crore.
They also wanted proper and effective economic diplomacy to bring foreign companies to Bangladesh, they said.
They also complained that banks are not cooperating and not creating proper facilities for potential borrowers in the disbursement of stimulus packages. In particular, cottage, small and medium enterprises are not getting money from stimulus packages, the businesses said.
Salman F Rahman, adviser to the Prime Minister on Private Industry and Investment, AK Abdul Momen, Foreign Minister, Tipu Munshi, Commerce Minister, Dr Abdur Razzaque, Agricultural Minister and Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun, Industries Minister, were among those who spoke at the meeting.
Former FBCCI presidents AK Azad, Abdul Matlub Ahmad, Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin spoke. Paban Chowdhury, executive chairman of Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority and Serazul Islam, executive chairman of Bangladesh Investment Development Authority, former Bangladesh Bank governor Salehuddin Ahmed, Fahmida Khatun, executive director of Centre for Policy Dialogue, Masrur Reaz, chairman of Policy Exchange, Mercy Tembon, World Bank Country Director, Manmohan Parkash, ADB country director and Mia Seppo UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh also spoke.
