Creating awareness to make hydrophobia-free society stressed

Experts yesterday attached importance to create large-scale mass- awareness on rabies infection to prevent the occurrences of hydrophobia in the society.
They underlined the need to make mass dog vaccination campaign a success to control of rabies which is very vital in the present context.
Lack of awareness, coordination and requisite information and limitation of logistics have been identified as major challenges towards preventing the diseases. So, there is no alternative to face the existing challenges collectively, they added.
The Department of Livestock organized the discussion styled “End Rabies Together” held at its office conference hall marking the World Rabies Day-2015 that observed today in the country for the third time.
Chief Executive Officer of Rajshahi City Corporation Ajahar Ali addressed the discussion as chief guest while District Livestock Officer Dr Mizanur Rahman and Health Education Officer Abdur Rahman spoke as special guests with Dr Kolyan Kumar Fouzder, Acting Deputy Director of Department of Livestock, in the chair.
Additional District Livestock Officer Dr Zulfikar Muhammad Akhtar Hossain, Upazila Livestock Officers Dr Subhash Chandra Sarker and Dr Asim Kumar Pramanik also addressed the meeting.
In his keynote presentation, Dr Kolyan Kumar Fouzder said the present government has adopted a Rabies Elimination Strategy for the first time in the country.
He says vaccination can reduce the effective reproductive number of dogs and break the cycle of rabies transmission instead of brutally and indiscriminately killing those.
DLO Dr Mizanur Rahman said the government has a massive intervention to eliminate the rabies. “Reduction of rabies by 90 percent within 2015 and elimination of rabies by 2020 is the main goal of the intervention without massive and cruelty killing of dogs”.
To this end, various activities like advocacy, communication and social mobilization, management of dog bite, mass dog vaccination and dog population management are being accomplished from top to bottom. Besides, he said dog bite management centers are functioning throughout the country.
In addition to distribution of vaccine, training of Physicians and Nurses has been accelerated.
Earlier, the department officials and staff brought out a colourful rally from its office premises and paraded some city streets before being gathered at the meeting venue.
