Crabs may be the poverty alleviation way in coastal areas as the government earn a lot of foreign exchange by exporting crabs every year. If the touch of modern equipment is given in this sector, poverty from the coastal areas can be reduced by crabs farming, according to the experts.
Sources said, if the crab farmers get government patronization, much more foreign exchange could be earned by exporting it to abroad.
It is learnt that the price of crabs in the local markets from taka 300 to 500 per kg according to sizes.
Fisheries directorate sources said, crabs were exported in the decade of 80 as non-running goods.
According to the sources of Export Bureau, in 1977-78, crabs were exported in abroad. Three years after of that period in 1982-83 fiscal year, crabs were exported again. The demand of crabs in abroad increased gradually and at the same time foreign exchange also increased.
In 1990-91, Bangladesh earns foreign exchange of taka 27 lakh 93 thousand by exporting crabs and in 1995-96, earns taka 23.68 crore, in 1998-99, earns taka 125 crore 22 lakh 39 thousand, in 1999-2000, taka 141 crore 66lakh 6 thousand, in 2001-2002, earns around 53 million dollar and in 2002-2003 fiscal year, Bangladesh earns foreign exchange around 52 dollar by exporting crabs in abroad.
Concerned sources said, price and demand of crabs are increasing in foreign markets every year, but its production is decreasing.
Tayebur Rahman, President of Koyra-Sundarbans crabs fattening Co-operative Society said, with the cooperation of his society, crabs production has started in the fattening center, members of the society would be self reliant by doing works in the crabs production center. Koyra Upazila cooperative directorate has been giving assistance in this regard.
