Economic Reporter :
Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed on Sunday said the report of Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) on the economic development came as a surprise to the people of the country because CPD is criticizing the development activities at a time when Bangladesh is going to graduate from LDCs in March this year.
“CPD does not find any development in the country when World Bank and other renowned local and foreign economists, researches and research organizations are highly praising Bangladesh’s socioeconomic achievements,” said Tofal while talking to journalists after a meeting with Swedish Ambassador to Bangladesh Ms Charlotta Schlyter at his ministry here.
“There is no difference between the statements of CPD and BNP,” he said.
The commerce minister said the rate of poverty was 43 percent in 2006 but it came down to 22.4 percent now. The rate of hardcore poor came down to 11.9 percent from 17.6 percent during this period, he added.
With successful implementation of SDGs the rate of hardcore power will come down to 3 percent in 2030, he said, adding that the government has initiated long-term programmes under social safety net to eliminate poverty from the country.
He said Bangladesh exported goods worth $10.53 billion in 2005-2006 and its total export stood at $35 billion in fiscal year 2016-17. The country’s forex reserves have stood at $32 billion and it received $35 billion as remittances, he added.
