Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) will purchase six Rail Mounted Quay Gantry Cranes at a cost of Tk 344.92 crore from China for speedy loading and unloading containers from ships. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) to this end was signed on Sunday at the meeting room of the Shipping Ministry in presence of Shipping Minister Sha-jahan Khan, report BSS.
CPA Chairman Rear Admiral M Khaled Iqbal and Executive General Manager of Shanghai Zhenhuya Heavy Industries Company Limited, a Chinese company, Chen Kai inked the MoU on behalf of their respective organizations, said an official handout.
The gantry cranes will reach the port by one and half years, the release said, adding the capacity of each crane is 40 tons. The each crane has a capacity of handling 25 to 32 twenty equivalent units (TEUSs) per hour. The cranes will be installed at Chittagong Port Newmooring Container Terminal (NCT).
With setting up of the cranes, the release said, the average stay time of the ships will be reduced. As a result the container handling capacity of the NCT meaning Chittagong Port will be increased significantly. Speaking on the occasion, the shipping minister said the present government is working sincerely to boost the capacity of Chittagong Port meaning its overall development, expansion, modernization and management.
He said the government has a plan to construct Patenga Container Terminal by 2019, Laldia Terminal by 2020 and the first phase of Bay Terminal by 2021, the release said. Shipping Secretary Md Abdus Samad was present on the occasion.
