Chattogram Bureau :
The volume of container handling is increasing day by day in Chittagong port. The project has gone into abeyance despite spending more than Tk 8 crore on an initiative to build a floating terminal at the outer anchorage to ensure the speed of the port. If the project is implemented, the capacity of Chittagong port would be greatly increased, said the concerned.
According to the concerned, some part of the capacity of the world class port is kept unused. At least 40 percent of the port yard space was kept vacant for various purposes including equipment movement.
But day by day Chittagong port is going to touch the whole capacity. The port yard’s capacity of 49,000 TEUS containers often touches the storage space. Container congestion inside the port, ship congestion on the outer anchorage, congestion of vehicles on the road often make Chittagong port fall into a terrible condition.
Therefore, in order to increase the speed of the port, an initiative was taken to build a floating terminal outside the port in the style of the developed world. It was hoped to build the terminal by 2021 and start container and cargo handling activities.
A feasibility study was carried out in 2016 at a cost of over Tk 8 crore for the construction of this terminal. Although a feasibility study, the project did not see the light of day.
