CPA confce to work together on climate challenge issues

Members of parliaments of Commonwealth Parliament Association have stressed to work together to addressing the challenges of climate issues and convincing youths for active participation in politics.
Addressing the opening session of 36th Small Branches Conference on Thursday, CPA Executive Committee Chairperson and Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury said the Commonwealth should raise united voice at the international climate change dialogue.
The eight-day long 63rd Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference was kicked off on Wednesday at Hotel Radisson Blu in the capital city.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will formally inaugurate the CPC 2017 at the South Plaza of Parliament on Sunday.
Shirin Sharmin said we should raise our voice on climate change issues under the framework of Paris Agreement to address problems of countries most vulnerable to climate change.
She said Bangladesh is one of the most vulnerable countries in terms of adverse impact of climate change.
The CPA Chairperson said this definitely needed global attention and collective efforts must be made to deal with the challenges.
“The CPA can come forward to combat collectively the challenge,” she said.
Angelo Farrugia, the Chairperson of Small Branches of CPA, said they have
 incorporated in their strategic plan the issue of how to encourage and convince youth community to actively take part in politics.
Farrugia, Speaker of Malta parliament, said this while addressing a news briefing before chairing the 36th Small Branches Conference.
He said the youths have to be encouraged in politics through addressing the areas like good governance, transparency, proper watchdog and how to fight corruption.
Farrugia said it needs to have a proper guideline that make a sense.
The small branches chairperson said the issues, including climate change and youth participation in politics contained in the strategy plan of the small branches, would be discussed throughout the conference.
Member countries or legislatures have a half a million or less population belonged to small branches, Farrugia added.
Replying to a question, Farrugia said the major problem facing the small branches is a particular problem of the world like the challenges of climate change, which the small branches cannot address alone on its own.
There are 43 small branches in CPA.
Out of 2.4 billion population of commonwealth, 60 per cent belonged to the youths of 30 years old, according to a CPA handout.
The theme of the conference is ‘Continuing to Enhancing the High Standards of Performance of Parliamentarians’.
On Thursday, different delegates, including speakers of parliament from various countries, joined the CPC, according to the CPC liaison office.
The office said some 562 CPA delegates from Commonwealth member states registered for attending the conference till Wednesday.
Out of the total registered 562 participants, 525 are delegates while 37 are spouses.
