Speaker of Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad Dr Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury said that the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) could play a vital role in the development of democracy, good governance and sustainable development of the country.
The Speaker said this while addressing the general assembly of the CPA at Cameroon’s capital Yaounde on Thursday, said a press release from the Jatiya Sangsad here on Friday.
Dr Sharmin, who has been elected Chairperson of Executive Committee of the CPA, also expressed her firm determination to work for the welfare of the common people of those countries in the CPA by involving the association with all multilateral issues in the world.
The member of the parliament has scope to play role in confronting the challenges including poverty alleviation, food autarky, reducing child and mother death rate, violence against women, disaster risk reduction and management and climate change adaptation, said the speaker.
“We are facing new challenges everyday in the age of globalization and we have to explore new paths to face these challenges, she said adding that CPA can play vital role in this regard.”
Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury has been elected the CPA chairperson for the next three years.
Deputy Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad M Fazle Rabbi Mia Chief Whip ASM Feroz have greeted the Speaker for her election as the chairperson of Executive Committee of the CPA.
