The Sadar Police Station of Cox’s Bazar has not recorded the case of Shipra Rani Devnath, a student of Stamford University’s film and media studies department and one of the associates of retired Major Sinha Mohammad Rashed Khan who was killed in police firing, against some police officials under the Digital Security Act.
Md Khairuzzaman, Officer-in-Charge of the police station, did not lodge the case. Instead he suggested Shipra to file it with Ramu Police Station or with the Cyber-Crimes Tribunal, Shipra’s lawyer Mahbubul Alam Tipu told it to reporters in front of the police station on Tuesday night.
Mostafijur Rahman, SP of Satkhira, and Md Mizanur Rahman Shelley, SP (Dhaka Metro — South) of the Police Bureau of Investigation, will be made accused in the case along with 150 others, said the lawyer.
“The OC also suggested that we may file the case with the cyber-crimes tribunal,” he added.
Shipra and another Stamford student Shahadul Islam Sefat were also present with their lawyers but did not wish to speak to journalists on account of being distraught. Shipra’s personal photos and videos went viral on social networking site Facebook after she was released from jail on bail in cases filed by police following the killing of Sinha.
That is why in a video statement on Monday, Shipra vowed to file cases under the Digital Security Act against police officials and others who circulated her private photos on social media.
Meanwhile, Judge Tamanna Farah of Cox’s Bazar Senior Judicial Magistrate’s Court ordered to hand over about 29 items including Rashed Khan’s associates Shipra Debnath’s computer hard disk, laptop and device to RAB. The court passed the order after hearing the RAB’s plea on Tuesday (August 19)
Earlier the High Court also fixed Thursday (today) for delivering order on a writ-petition that challenged two police officers for posting personal photographs of Shipra Debnath along with provocative comments on Facebook.
The bench of Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Md Khairul Alam set the date for passing the order after a virtual hearing on the issue.
Sinha was killed in police firing at Baharchhara police check-post in Teknaf upazila on July 31. Later, police arrested his two companions – Shipra and Shahedul Islam Sifat.
On August 5, Sinha’s sister Sharmin Shahria Ferdous filed a case with the Senior Judicial Magistrate Court of Teknaf against nine people including Pradeep Kumar Das and Liakat Ali.
