At least five people including two siblings were killed and four others injured early Tuesday due to landslides triggered by incessant downpour in Lighthouse area of Sadar municipality and in Kaimmargona area of South Mithachhari union of Ramu Upazila.
It is feared that landslide may occur at places over the hilly regions of Chittagong and Sylhet divisions.
In Ramu, two minors namely Saima, 5, and her brother Zihan, 7, of Kaimmargona area died on the spot and their parents were injured as ceiling of their house collapsed due to landslide around 3:30 am, he said.
The parents – Ziaur Rahman, 35, and Anarkali – were admitted to Sadar Hospital.
An excessive downpour since Monday afternoon caused the landslide, witnesses said.
Chittagong recorded the highest 233 ml rainfall during the last 3-4 days inundating the vast areas of the port city for the 4th time causing immense suffering to the dwellers.
Torrential rain, triggered by active monsoon, continued for the third consecutive day on Tuesday across the country, including capital Dhaka, jeopardizing the normal life.
The met office recorded 49.0 mm of rainfall in Dhaka in the last 24 hours from 6:00 am on Monday to 6:00 am Tuesday.
Some places in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions are likely to experience heavy (44 – 88 MM) to very heavy (89mm or more) rains during the next 24 hours due to active monsoon, said Met Office.
Besides, the maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to keep hoisted local cautionary signal No 3 as squally weather may affect the ports and coastal areas of the country.
Md Shaheenul Islam, an official of Bangladesh Meteorological Department, said that the intensity of rainfall across the country is likely to come down from Wednesday.
