Cow fattening has gained popularity among the youths in the district as an important source of income generation leading to economic self-reliance.
According to District Livestock Office, a small number of people in six upazilas of the district was involved in the business a couple of years back. But in the recent time this scenario has changed as many educated youths have involved the venture receiving modern training.
District Livestock Officer (DLO) Hasan Imam said cow fattening has gained popularity in the district. At present over 250 persons are involved in the programme under National Agricultural Technology Project.
He said over 3,000 cows in the district are now under intense care and nourishment for selling during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha.
Abdul Halim of Mirjarchar union of Raipura upazila last year fattened 50 cows and earned a profit of Taka five lakh within four months. One Baki of Shilmandhi union under Sadar upazila also fattened 40 cows in her farm last year and she earned over Taka four lakh. She has 50 cows this year.
