Covid-19 patients increased in hospitals’ ICU beds according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) data released on Friday.
Besides, the cases and rates of infections also are increasing recently.
Professor Dr. Nazrul Islam, former Vice-Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) told The New Nation, “On May 31, the infection rate hiked to 20 percent. The country witnessed 20 to 22 percent infection rate till August 20. Then the rate decreased to 10 to 12 percent and remaining almost identical till the recent days.”
But the infections rate increased to 13.83 percent on Tuesday, according to the DGHS.
On Friday the infection rate hiked more and reached to 14.58 percent as per the DGHS data.
On the day the country recorded 2,275 new cases of the novel coronavirus while 17 more fatalities were registered.
In view of the increasing covid-19 patients, cases and deaths, people of the country are in fear of possible second wave attack of the fatal virus.
The experts also urged the government to be well prepared for the second wave.
When contacted, Professor Dr. Muzaherul Huq, former Advisor of World Health Organisation (WHO) told The New Nation on Friday, “There is no doubt that the infection is increasing. We have suggested the government to strengthening health services facilities in every hospitals till upazila levels.”
In these circumstances, the government urged all not to be anxious and asked to follow the health safety rules properly.
In face of probable second wave attack of coronavirus, the government has taken early preparations including increasing treatment facilities in covid dedicated hospitals as per the recent statement of the Health Minister Zahid Maleque.
Besides, the National Technical Advisory Committee on Covid-19 warned the government to take adequate preparation to face the probable second wave attack of the disease.
“We asked the government to increase number of beds in dedicated hospitals, ensure centrally supplied oxygen system in every hospitals and adequate number of ventilators, nasal cannullas in every health service centers including upazila and district level hospitals. The government ensured us that they are alert enough and ensuring those in time,” Professor Dr Mohammad Shahidullah, Chairman National Technical Advisory Committee on Covid-19 told The New Nation on Friday.
He said, “So far I have learned that all of our hospitals and clinics have sufficient doctors, nurses and are well equipped with adequate ventilators and oxygen supply with centrally systems.”
Meanwhile, early this month, the health minister directed three hospitals to retake as covid dedicated facilities which were dropped from the list in September. These hospitals are Dhaka Mohanagar Hospital, Lalkuthi Hospital and Bashundhara Covid-19 Hospital.
Those hospitals were dropped from the list due staying less patients for long.
As per the DGHS data there are about 15,448 beds in covid dedicated hospitals across the country.
