Covid-19 patients are on surge in the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) creating extra pressure on the employees, sources said.
“About 10 Covid-19 patients are getting admission for medical treatment in DMCH every day,” Brigadier General Md Nazmul Haque told The New Nation on Friday.
He said, “We have fixed one floor for treating Covid-19 patients in recent days. But now, we have allotted another floor for them, as the number of covid patients is on surge.”
Brigadier General Nazmul Haque said also that they had taken preparations to allot more floors for giving medical treatment, as the trend of patients’ admissions are on hike from different parts of the country.
The other officials said that the authorities of the DMCH are gearing up to meet the patients admitted there with covid symptoms.
Several officials of the hospital said that many of these admitted patients have been fully vaccinated against the virus.
The DMCH Director said, number of fully vaccinated people infected with the fatal virus as they have not maintained the health safety rules outlined by the World Health Organisation and also recommended by the health authorities here.” The Director further said that in response to the escalating number of patients with coronavirus symptoms, DMCH is gradually increasing beds at its Covid units. Several wards would be evacuated in phases as part of the plan.
Officials involved with patients admission procedures said they have become tired of dealing with the patients’ family members coming everyday with request of taking admission of their nearest one with covid symptoms.
“We asked them repeatedly as per authority’s
directives that if patients are not seriously sick, they have to follow health rules and doctors’ advices staying home,” said one of the officials preferring anonymity.
He said, most of the people are found panicked due to the media reports of Omicron variant.
As a result, many of them will not be able to understand the matter of emergency or normal health situation about their patients, he said.
One of the senior medical officers of the DMCH said that they had all the necessary facilities and preparations at the hospital, starting from primary care to ICU support.
But, the people should realize the matter of necessity. If their patients are not sick severely, they have to stay home and follow the physicians’ advices properly, he said.
“Everyone should get vaccinated and follow health safety rules adequately. There is no alternative to get safe from being infected from the fatal virus,” the senior physician said.
Muhammed Ashraful Alam, Assistant Director of DMCH, said the hospital increased by 900 beds from only 300 seats including Sheikh Hasina Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute and ICU units.
Official data from the DMCH showed that a total of 11 patients were admitted there in the last 24 hours till Friday morning.
It revealed also that a total of 32,781 patients were admitted there with Covid-19, and Covid-like symptoms between May 2020 and January 4, 2021.
Among them, 13,923 persons tested positive. About 1,580 of the admitted covid patients died in this tenure.
