Bangladesh has recorded its deadliest day of the coronavirus pandemic yet with 247 deaths in the last 24 hours amid a worsening pandemic situation in the country.
Monday was the second straight day Bangladesh recorded more than 200 deaths as the second wave of the pandemic carries on unabated and keeps setting grim new records. Altogether 19,521, people have died from Covid-19 in the country.
The number of cases surged to 1,179,827 as of 8 am on Monday with 15,192 new infections, government data showed.
Dhaka registered the most daily deaths and new cases among the eight divisions, logging 72 fatalities and 7,953 infections. Chattogram counted 61 deaths and 2,467 cases, Khulna 46 deaths and 1,186 cases, Rajshahi 21 deaths and 908 cases.
Nationwide, another 11,052 people recovered from the illness, bringing the total number of recoveries to 1,009,923.
As many as 50,952 samples were tested across the country, for a positivity rate of 29.82 percent. The latest figures put the recovery rate at 85.6 percent and the mortality rate at 1.65 percent.
Till now, 4,298,086 people received the second dose of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine. Meanwhile, a little over 1.5 million people received the first dose of the vaccine, and are awaiting the second dose. Additionally, 153,588 people received the first dose of Sinopharm vaccine during the same period, taking the total to 1,326,212, while 7,591 people received the second dose till Monday.
Meanwhile, till now 50,223 people were administered the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine and 288 people received the second dose till now.
Also, 57,781 people received the first dose of the Moderna vaccine taking the total number to 363,904.
The health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a strain of coronavirus named Sars-CoV-2, on March 8 last year.
The fast-spreading coronavirus has claimed more than 4,178,307 lives across the world and infected more than 194,969,558 people across the world till Thursday afternoon, according to Worldometer.
As many as 176,888,936 people have recovered from Covid-19, which has spread to 220 countries and territories across the planet.
