The country crossed five thousand Covid-19 infections in a single day as it registered 5,222 new Covid-19 cases and eight deaths in the last 24 hours to 8am on Sunday.
The data of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said that the fresh cases recorded after testing 29,305 samples.
The daily positivity rate increased to 17.82pc from Saturday’s 14.35pc during the period, the data showed.
The country last logged 5,249 cases and 114 deaths on August 24, last year with a positivity rate at 15.12 per cent in a day.
The death toll in the country stands at 28,144 with mortality rate of 1.74pc, while the total caseload is 1,617,711, according to the DGHS data.
On the other hand, 293 people recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of recoveries to 1,552,893.
Among the deceased, four were reported in Dhaka division, while three in Chattogram and another in Sylhet division.
The country reported its first three cases of Covid-19, on March 8, 2020. The first death was reported on March18.
Amid the growing concern over the new Omicron variant of the Coronavirus, the government on January 13 announced fresh 11-point restrictions on movement of people.
Bangladesh’s total tally of Omicron cases reached 33 according to GISAID, a global initiative on sharing all influenza data.
A large number of the population has also been vaccinated with the country crossing the landmark of administering 100 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines on December 1.
Meanwhile, Health Minister Zahid Maleque urged all to be vaccinated and to maintain health safety rules for the sake of containing the spreading of the fatal disease.
Zahid Maleque on Saturday said that the government is not considering to impose a fresh lockdown, but would be compelled to do it if mass people ignore following the safety measures constantly.
