As the pandemic is ripping through Bangladesh, the country recorded the highest number coronavirus-related deaths in a single day.
With the deaths of 74 more people in the last 24 hours until 8:00 am on Thursday, Bangladesh’s Covid-19 death count now stands at 9,521. With the latest figure, the number of total fatalities rose to 9,521 till Thursday morning.
Besides, the country logged more than 666,000 Covid-19 cases with 6,854 people testing positive in the 24-hour span.
With the fresh infections, the number of total confirmed cases jumped to 666,132, according to the daily virus update released on Thursday afternoon by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
The latest data also marked a jump in the seven-day moving average of coronavirus fatalities – 59.43 – from Wednesday’s 57.29.
Of the 74 deceased, including 48 men and 26 women, 43 were from Dhaka division, 15 from Chittagong, seven from Khulna, four from Barisal, three from Rajshahi and two from Sylhet division.
Among the victims, 70 died while undergoing treatment at different hospitals and four at home. So far, 7,130 men (74.89%) and 2,391 women (25.11%) have died from Covid-19 in the country.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, 5,482 people have died in Dhaka division, 1,709 in Chittagong, 520 in Rajshahi, 604 in Khulna, 284 in Barisal, 334 in Sylhet, 381 in Rangpur, and 207 in Mymensingh.

The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.43%.
The DGHS said 33,328 samples had been collected from suspected Covid-19 patients between Wednesday and Thursday mornings. As many as 33,193 samples were tested in the 243 authorized labs – government and private – across the country and 6,854 new patients were confirmed.
The latest figures show an infection rate of 20.65%.
To date, 4,915,758 tests have been conducted in the country, leading to an overall infection rate of 13.55% so far.
Bangladesh on Wednesday recorded the highest number of Covid-19 cases (7,626) in a day, since the pandemic broke out in the country in March last year.
Amid the backdrop of a resurgence of Covid-19 deaths and cases in the country, the government imposed a week-long countrywide lockdown from Monday to choke the spread of coronavirus and contain the number of fatalities. However, people yet remain apathetic to health rules.
The DGHS said 3,391 people had recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.
So far, 565,030 patients – 84.82% – have made full recovery across the country.
On March 8 last year, the health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain named Sars-CoV-2. The country recorded its first fatality on March 18.
The novel coronavirus broke out in China’s Wuhan city in late December 2019 and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.
The fast-spreading coronavirus had claimed more than 2,904,301 lives and infected at least 133,838,227 people across the world till Thursday afternoon, according to Worldometer.
As many as 107,916,488 people have recovered from Covid-19, which has spread to 219 countries and territories across the planet.
