Covid-19 deaths top 19,000

Bangladesh registered 195 new Covid-19 deaths on Saturday, taking the total fatalities from the deadly coronavirus to 19,046.
Of the 195 deceased-103 men and 92 women – 68 were from Dhaka division, 41 from Khulna, 36 from Chittagong, 18 from Rajshahi, 16 from Rangpur, 10 from Mymensingh, five from Barisal, and one from Sylhet division.
One hundred ninety of them died while undergoing treatment at the different hospitals of the country while five died at home.
Besides, the Covid-19 caseload surged to 1,153,344 after 6,780 people tested positive for the disease until 8 am Saturday, according to the latest government data.
As many as 20,827 samples, including the pending ones, were tested in the 639 authorized labs – government and private – across the country, yielding a positivity rate of 32.55 per cent.
To date, 7,417,694 tests have been conducted in the country, leading to an overall infection rate of 13.55 per cent.
Nationwide, another 9,723 people recovered from the illness, bringing the total number of recoveries to 988,339.
The latest figures put the recovery rate at 85.69 percent and the mortality rate at 1.65 percent.
The health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a strain of coronavirus named Sars-CoV-2, on March 8, 2020.
The fast-spreading coronavirus has claimed more than 4,163,000 lives and infected over 194 million people across the world till Saturday afternoon, according to worldometer.
