A Dhaka court on Thursday sent owner of the Mayur-2 launch, Mosaddek Hanif Soad, on 3-day remand for interrogation in a case filed over the recent Buriganga launch accident that claimed at least 34 lives.
Judge of the Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Dhaka, Monika Khan, passed the order after holding a hearing on a petition placed by Shahidul Alam investigation officer of the case, and Sub-Inspector of the Sadarghat river police unit.
Earlier the investigation officer produced him in the court and placed a petition
to send him on 7-day remand. Advocate Iqbal Hossain who took part in the hearing on behalf of Mosaddek Hanif Soad prayed for his bail opposing the remand prayer. On the other hand Public Prosecutor Md Anwarul Kabir Babul said in the hearing that it was not an accident rather a murder.
After the hearing, the court rejected the bail prayer and sent the accused on 3-day remand.
Meanwhile, river police unit in early hours of Thursday arrested the owner of Mayur-2 launch from the Sobhanbagh area in the capital.
On June 29, Morning Bird, a launch from Munshiganj, capsized within seconds in the Buriganga near Farashganj terminal after it was hit by Mayur-2, a Dhaka-bound launch from Chandpur.
On June 30, Sadarghat river police station filed a case with Dakkhin Keraniganj Police Station accusing Mayur-2 launch owner Mosaddek Hanif Soad and its six employees for the accident.
Earlier on Tuesday morning, police arrested a staff of Mayur-2 from Sutrapur area in the capital who was identified as Abdus Salam. The same day, Dhaka Chief Judicial Magistrate Court approved a three-day remand of Abdus Salam for questioning.
