Court scraps bail plea of 4 corona safety equipment hoarders

A Dhaka court on Sunday scrapped bail pleas of four persons accused of illegally stockpiling different coronavirus safety equipments, and sent them to jail.
The four accused are – Anwar Hossain, Amit Basak, Shoaib and Shuvro.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ziaur Rahman passed the order as police produced them before the court after the end of their one-day remand in the case and pleaded to keep them behind bars for the sake of proper investigation.
Defence counsels, however, pleaded to release the accused on bail. After hearing both the sides, the court scrapped their bail pleas and sent them to jail.
Police on April 16 arrested them from their office at Jahura Tower in capital’s Bangla Motor area and recovered a huge number of corona safety equipments, including testing kits, which were in no way supposed to be in common hands.
“We recovered 275 corona testing kits, 9050 regular face masks, 100 N95 face masks, 198 PPE gowns, 960 pairs of hand gloves, 250 pairs of protective goggles, 900 caps and 1440 shoe covers from their office in Jahura Tower in capital’s Bangla Motor area,” assistant police commissioner Zaved Iqbal said on that day.
A case was filed against the accused with Shahbagh Police Station under section 25/ 25 (b) of The Special Powers ACT.
