Couple shot in Cox’s Bazar over land dispute

A couple was shot and two other women were injured in a clash between two groups at Kodailladia village in Pekua upazila of Cox’s Bazar district on Monday noon over land dispute.
Bullet-wound couple is Abdus Salam, 38, and Raushan Ara Akter, 36, while Hamida Begum, 38, and Yasmin Sultana, 19, were injured.
The couple is now undergoing treatment at Chattogram Medical College Hospital.
Locals said Mir Ahmed and his niece Arif of the village had been at loggerhead over a piece of land.
Local influentials including Abdus Salam in a village arbitration decided to give the land to Mir Ahmed.
Later, Ariful Islam and 8-10 people attacked Abdus Salam around 12 noon and opened fire on him.
As Abdus Salam’s wife and others tried to rescue him, they opened fire on Raushan Ara and hacked other women.
Pekua Upazila Health Complex Dr Minhajul Haque said the condition of Abdus Samad is critical.
Pekua Police Station officer in-charge (OC) Saifur Rahman Mazumdar said on information, police were sent to the spot.
