Countrymen urged to extend support to disabled for uplift

Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith on Sunday urged the countrymen to extend support to the people with disabilities to ensure their participation in the development process.
“It is our duty to take care of the people who are physically disabled or visually impaired…We need to change our mind,” he said, speaking at a discussion at Bangabandhu International Convention Center here.
National Foundation for Disability Development (NFDD), Bangladesh National Social Welfare Council (BNSWC) and National Disability Forum (NDF) are jointly organized the programme marking the 26th International Day of Persons with Disabilities and 19th National Day of Persons with Disabilities.
The theme of the day is ‘Transformation Towards Sustainable and Resilient Society for All’.
Chairman to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Social Welfare Ministry Dr Md Mozammel Hossain, Secretary of the Social Welfare Ministry Md Zillar Rahman, NDF Secretary General Dr Selina Akther and representative of disabled people Tahmina Akther Tanu, among others, addressed the discussion with State Minister for the Social Welfare Ministry Nuruzzaman Ahmed in the chair.
Muhith said there are around 16 lakh disabled people in the country which is one percent of the total population.
He said the present government under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is doing its best to assist the challenged people.
“Now, it is our duty to take care of them…I urge all of you not to neglect the disabled people. Please give them honour,” the minister added.
He said, “The people with disabilities have potentiality of becoming worthy citizens, if we can provide need-based supports to enhance their skills.”
After the discussion, smart wheel chairs, smart tricycles and smart talking devices were distributed among the injured freedom fighters and disabled people.
Later in the function, a reception was accorded to some personalities who are contributing in the society, especially for the people with disabilities.
The Finance Minister also inaugurated a fair at Mirpur through video conference marking the day.
