Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal on Saturday said the poverty rate will come down to zero in Bangladesh by 2030 with continuation of the present pace of development.
“Bangladesh will be the 23rd economic power in the world in 2050,” he said speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural session of a two-day conference of Bangladesh Institute for Development Studies (BIDS) in the city.
The conference titled “The Bangladesh Journey” is being held at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre.
The driving force of Bangladesh economy is the country’s farmers, wavers, fishermen and other toiling masses.
He urged all to keep confidence on the economic activities being run the country under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The BIDS is holding the conference to review Bangladesh’s economic advancement and know the opinions of researchers, policymakers and civil society members.
BIDS Director General Dr. AKM Murshid presented a keynote paper in the conference. Prime Minister’s Energy Affairs Secretary Dr. Toufiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, former Caretaker Government Adviser Dr. Hossain Zillur Rahman, Planning Secretary Tarique Ul Islam and BRAC University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Syed Sad Andalib addressed the conference as guests of honour.
On the concluding day today, a session on “Democracy, Good Governance and Development” will be held with Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) Chairperson Sultana Kamal in the chair.
BISD Senior Research Fellow Binayok Sen will present the keynote paper while former Cabinet Secretary and Finance Secretary Akbar Ali Khan, BIDS Research Fellow M Asaduzzaman, lawyer Tania Amir and Dhaka Tribune Editor Zafar Sobhan will take part in the discussion.
The concluding session will be presided over by Bangladesh Bank former Governor Dr. Mohammad Farashuddin while Prime Minister’s Economic Affairs Adviser Dr. Mashiur Rahman will be present as the chief guest.
