Country’s many areas, especially the north, northwest and southwest regions, continued to reel under cold wave with minimum temperature plummeting to 5.00 degrees Celsius for the third consecutive day on Saturday.
The cold wave condition also intensified in capital Dhaka yesterday with the return of icy winds from the northern part of the country.
On Saturday, the country recorded this season’s
coldest day at Rajarhat of Rangpur and Tetulia of Panchagarh as mercury dropped to 5.00 degrees Celsius, an official at the Bangladesh Meteorological Department told The New Nation.
With prevailing of foggy weather, the minimum temperature in most areas dropped to several notches below normal, disrupting normal life in rural areas, especially in northern, western and southwestern districts.
Most people in north, west and southwest regions remained home. Transports on the roads are few. Most shops remained closed. The poor are burning hey and fallen leaves to keep them warm. Poor day labourers find it difficult to earn bread.
Cold related diseases like pneumonia, cough, asthma, diarrhoea and fever are spreading in villages there. Elderly and minors suffering from the disease have been reporting to the hospital and health complex every day.
The Met official said Rajarhat of Rangpur and Tetulia of Panchagarh recorded the country’s lowest temperature of 5.00 degree Celsius this season on Saturday.
“The prevailing countrywide cold wave may continue for two more days, further dipping the temperature. Mercury may drop further on Sunday and Monday,” the official forecasts.
According to Met office, severe cold wave is sweeping over the regions of Tangail, Srimangal, Rajshahi, Pabna, Dinajpur, Kurigram, Nilphamari, Panchagarh and Chudanga.
Besides, mild to moderate cold wave is sweeping over Barisal division and the regions of Faridpur, Madaripur, Gopalgonj, Mymensingh, Netrokona, Sitakunda, Rangamati, Comilla, Feni, Bogra, Sirajgonj, Rangpur, Sayedpur, Khulna, Satkhira, Jessore and Kushtia and it may continue, a Met Office weather bulletin said on Saturday.
Weather may remain dry over the country. Light to moderate fog is likely to occur at places over the country during mid night till morning, it said, adding night and day temperature may remain nearly unchanged over the country.
Our Rangpur Correspondent adds: The severe cold wave coupled with cooler wind and fog continued paralysing normal life in the northern districts causing untold sufferings and miseries to the people for the third consecutive day on Saturday.
The sun remained covered behind the thick layers of fogs amid blowing cooler winds almost throughout the day yesterday affecting vehicular traffic and forcing the drivers to put headlights of their vehicles on for averting accidents.
The concerned district administrations, NGOs, charitable, business bodies and other organisations have intensified distribution of warm clothes among the cold-hit people in the northern districts in recent days, official sources said.
According to reports reaching here from the remote and hardly reachable sandy char villages in Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Gaibandha, Rangpur and Nilphamari districts on the river basins, the normal life remained severely affected in those areas yesterday.
The number of pneumonia and diarrhoeal patents, mostly the older persons and children, continues increasing due to the sweeping bone-chilling cold wave in the northwestern region.
Besides cold, ferry services on Paturia-Daulatdia and Mawa-Kawrakandi routes are being badly affected due to dense fog.
An official of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation’s Paturia ghat office said, they are being compelled to suspend ferry services due to low visibility caused by dense fog.
