Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury said that the country is now self sufficient in food production due to adoption of modern technology in the agriculture sector particularly during the regime of the present government.
“The hybrid technology which was adopted by the government for the first time in agriculture during the regime between 1996 and 2001 period and the very latest technology like ‘Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) also was adopted subsequently on 2009 with a view to make the country self-sufficient in food production”, said the minister.
The agriculture minister said this as the chief guest on Thursday while addressing a seminar on ‘Transforming agricultural services through innovation’ organized on the occasion of two-day ‘Civil Service in Development Innovation-2016’ Summit at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Novo Theatre in Dhaka aimed at highlighting Digital Bangladesh and Vision-2021 through different innovations at home and abroad.
Project Director, Access to Information (A2I) M Mostafizur Rahman moderated the function while Agriculture Secretary Mainuddin Abdullah and Fisheries and Livestock Secretary Maksudul Hasan Khan spoke at the seminar as the guest of honour.
Director General (DG) of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) Md Hamidur Rahman read the keynote speech at the seminar.
The government had a plan to make the country self sufficient in food production and that’s why hybrid technology was adopted in agriculture sector by the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina ignoring ruthless criticism and all the impediments in this regard, said Matia.
Criticizing all the previous governments came to power after assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, she said they had no plan to make the country self-sufficient in food production.
She added that during the last twenty-one years before the Awami League government came to power in 1996 the country virtually was import-based and was totally dependent on others in agriculture.
The agriculture minister told the function that there is no criticism when we import GMO food like soyabean oil, canola, maize from abroad but when we had applied the technology in brinjal production we had to face huge criticism for applying the technology.
By applying the GMO technology, Matia said the country witnessed significant rise in brinjal production ahead of the Ramadan and that’s why there was no crisis of the vegetable during the holy month and price was stable.
