A court sent Saraipara Ward Councillor Saber Ahmed to jail on Tuesday over the killing of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader Mahiuddin Sohel.
Saber’s lawyer Sheikh M Iftekhar Shimul said his client had been taken into police custody.
The Awami League leader secured a month’s interim bail from the High Court. He was told to get bail from the subordinate court within this period.
Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate Akbar Hossain Mridha rejected his bail plea after a hearing in the case.
BCL leader Sohel was lynched by a mob at Pahartali Railway Market for alleged extortion on January 7.
Sohel’s family claimed that it was a premeditated murder. His younger brother Shakirul Islam Shishir filed a case at Double Mooring Police Station naming 27 people.
Saber is one of the main accused. So far, 17 suspects have been arrested.
