Jhenaidah Correspondent :
The cotton farmers of three districts under Jhenaidah zone are almost satisfied with the prices of cotton seeds this season.
They have been expecting 12 thousand tones of cotton seeds from 3,990 hectares of land in 2015-16 farming season.
The zone covers 21 units of the cotton development board (CDB) in Jhenaidah, Magura and Faridpur districts.
CDB office sources in Jhenaidah zone informed, 3,180 hectares of land was brought under the farming through its 15 units in Jhenaidah, 800 hectares under five units in Magura and 4,100 hectares of land under 21 units of Faridpur district.
The production of cotton seeds was expected for 11,970 tones in the season. The farmers in the zone in last season had produced 12,300 tones of cotton seeds on 4,100 hectares of land, the sources said.
Framer Basharat Ali of Porahati village under Jhenaidah Sadar upazila said, they were disheartened when the price of cotton seeds was re-fixed at Taka 48 for each maund (forty kilograms). But they had demanded at least Taka 68.50 for the same in the current season. The farmers have been playing role to reduce the import of the cotton as it costs huge foreign currency every year. But their demand was met up partially when were receiving Taka 2,100 from each maund of the cotton seeds as against their demand for this season.
Sariful Islam, another cotton farmer of Raghunandapur under Sailkupa upazila in Jhenaidah when contacted said, he was happy as the production of cotton seeds was atleast 50 more than the previous seasons. The China variety of the seeds has provided him 14-15 maunds of seeds in the current season that would cover his desires.
Sariful Islam said, the farmers in the area had shown their interest in farming the China variety hybrid cotton seeds as the CDB had been providing incentives to the cotton farmers like him. Hopping better yield and prices, he had expanded the cotton farming land to seven bighas as against last season for three bighas.
