`Cost-free schooling for all illiterate citizens by 2018`

Primary and Mass Education Minister Mostafizur Rahman Fizar on Monday said the government is going to take initiatives to bring all illiterate people under a cost-free literacy programme by 2018.
“We have successfully implemented a pilot project at Fulbaria and Parbartipur upazilas and brought all illiterate people under literacy programme in 2015 with the help of local Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), Bangladesh Awami Jubo League (BAJL), Awami League (AL), local educated people and teachers without spending money from the public exchequer,” he told BSS at his ministry office.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has already given her consent in this regard, the minister said adding, “I have plans to involve workers and leaders of BCL, BAJL,
AL and other local people to implement the programme independently.”
Besides, the government has undertaken a project involving Taka 452 crore to bring 45 lakh people from 250 upazilas under cent percent literacy programme by three years, Fizar said.
He said non-government organizations would implement the project within three
years. The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) has
given its nod to the scheme in 2014.
