Cost effective paddy trans-planter saves time, requires no seedbed

When the farmers have been spending huge money to transplant the saplings of various types of paddy and consuming maximum time for the same, the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) in Jhenaidah supplied the rice transplanting machine among the farmers to minimize the cost and time.
 The machine is gaining popularity among the farmers in; Sailkupa of Jhenaidah district.
Mitul Mia, a farmer of Gosaidanga village when seen driving the rice transplanter in his transplanting Aman (T-Aman) plot said, he has been transplanting the saplings on his two bighas of land in the season out of total ten bighas on an experimental basis. Earlier they produced plants on small tray which did not require any space like seed beds, he said.
Mitul said, he was provided training of rice trans-planter from the office of the DAE in Jhenaidah with the assistance of the SAAO. Farmers Titu, Saheb Ali, Sadar Uddin and some others brought at least 15 bighas of land under the system in the current season.
The farmers said, usually they have to spend Taka 3,000 to 3,600 for each acre of land in traditional system with day labourers. Further, it requires huge saplings and consumes huge time to complete the transplantation. But the rice trans-planter requires Taka 300 to 400 for the same land within a few hours, they said.
Sub- assistant Agriculture Officer (SAAO) of the DAE of Sarutia block Moslehuddin Tuhin at the field when contacted said, the neighboring farmers who have been witnessing the activities have been expressing that they might bring their lands under the system in next season.
Upazila agriculture officer Sanjoy Kumar Kundu said, the tender saplings are produced on specialized tray which does not require ant land for seed bed purposes. It also saves the total production cost of the farmers a lot. Further, the saplings are not damaged any way as it is transplanted with machine in a line helps wedding, applying fertilizer and pesticides and other management easily, Kundu said.
