Life Desk :
Scientists posit a ‘Big Bang theory’ to explain the evolution of the Universe. All the matter in the Universe was concentrated into a single extraordinarily tiny point which enlarged rapidly in a hot explosion, producing the cosmos as we know it today.
The Earth revolves around the Sun in orderly fashion, getting light and life. The Moon illuminates at night, thanks to light from the Sun.
But what keeps this cosmos in such remarkable order? It has to be love, cosmic love, interplanetary love, galactic love – no less than heavenly love.
It’s love that keeps the planets spinning in their orbits and not careening wildly out of control, it’s love that leads to the order and rigour of the Sun bestowing life to Earth, it’s love that makes the Sun give us the Moon so we have a guardian night light. And all of this without these cosmic elements touching one another.
Even love, though, has its limits. Every once in a while, this long-distance love feels the need for consummation. The Sun and the Moon have been looking at each other with longing for far too long. They feel overwhelmed and helpless.
That’s when they come together. The Moon, the recipient of the Sun’s love for so long, decides a few times a year she should envelop her benefactor with love. Selfish, for those few times, she refuses to let the Earth see the Sun. She wants the Sun for herself. That, then, is a Solar Eclipse. But the Sun and the Moon keep it brief. They love the Earth and the cosmos too, after all. So after a brief embrace, the Moon relents. Because if you love someone, you set them free.
