Int'l Day for Right to Information observed: Corruption -free country, transparency in all spheres of society stressed

Under the joint auspices of Bagerhat District Administration, Bagerhat Sadar Upazila Administration and SANAC (Sachetan Nagrik Committee), Bagerhat International Day for Right to Information was observed in Bagerhat district town in a befitting manner on Wednesday .
 In this connection a colourful rally that was brought out from the DC-office premises paraded the roads of the campus on account of inclement weather. It was led by Tapan Kumar Biswas, newly appointed DC, Bagerhat.
 After the end of the rally a lively discussion meeting was held in the DC’s conference room on the significance of the day with Mohammad Mamunul Hasan, ADC (Gen), Bagerhat in the chair. Adv. Jahangir Ali Babu, convener of the observance committee of International Day for the Access to Information-2016 explained the need and importance of Day in his address of welcome. Prof. Chowdhury Abdur Rob, former President of SANAC, Bagerhat read out the concept paper prepared by TIB (Transparency International Bangladesh) in the meeting. Tapan Kumar Biswas, DC, Bagerhat while was speaking in the meeting as the chief guest said, without the law of Access to Information transparency, accountability and good governance is not possible. He added, we are on the way to achieve something through the law. He further added that the govt. had adopted a number of appreciable steps to change the lots of the people. The meeting was also addressed by Sharif Nazrul Islma, Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Bagerhat Sadar as the special guest. Prof. ABM. Mosharraf Husain, Vice-president of SANAC, Bagerhat also spoke on the occasion as the main speaker, educationist Prof. Mozaffar Hossain, Kamruzzaman, District Public Relation Officer, Upazila Secondary Education Officer, Bagerhat Sadar, Monjurul Islam, SAJAN member and Shilpi Aktar, NGO representative.
BSS from Gaibandha reports: International Day for Right to Information was celebrated in the district on Wednesday with a call to build corruption free country and ensure accountability and transparency and good governance in all spheres of the society. Marking the day, district administration in cooperation with Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) chalked the elaborate programmes.
In the morning, a colourful procession led by deputy commissioner (DC) M. Abdus Samad was brought out from Independence Square and ended in front of Zila Shilpakala Academy (ZSA) here parading the main roads of the town.
Later, a discussion meeting was also held at the auditorium of ZSA with additional deputy commissioner Mohammad Mizanur Rahman in the chair.
DC M. Abdus Samad addressed the meeting as the chief guest and Sadar UNO Ashraful Momin Khan was present as the special guest.
The meeting was also addressed, among others, by district information officer Sabiha Akter Lucky, president of Sachetan Nagarik Committee, district unit, Gobinda Lal Das and trainer on Right to Information (RTI) Act-2009 of Information Commission Sarker M. Shahiduzzaman.
As information is an important tool of empowering people, the present government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has passed the Right to Information (RTI) Act 2009 and established Information Commission to implement the Act, the speakers said.
Free flow of information strengthened citizen’s right of access to information as well as empowers people to exercise their right at both society and state levels, they also said.
DC M. Abdus Samad said successful implementation of RTI would ensure independence of mass media and the observance of the day would create much awareness among the people about RTI Act-2009 and hence promote its application.
Terming the RTI Act, 2009 as the fundamental and constitutional right, the people have got the opportunity to obtain all information from the government offices including non government ones, the DC also said.
A large number of people including district and upazila level officials, social workers, NGO activists, leaders of different right groups, teachers, and students participated in the programmes.
BSS from Faridpur adds: International Day for Right to Information was observed here today in a befitting manner through holding rally and discussion meeting.
A colorful rally participated by students, Ngo men and officials paraded the main thoroughfares of the town with a big banner and slogans to create awareness among the people about their right to know the information from the government, semi-government and other service oriented organizations.
The discussion meeting held at the conference room of DC was chaired by Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Md. Eradul Haque while DC Umme Salma Tanzia attended as the chief guest.
In the meeting Area Manager of TIB Md. Manirul Haque made a power point presentation on Right to Information law.
Speakers at a discussion meeting stressed the need for creating awareness among the citizens about practicing and using the right to information law particularly at field levels because the rural people en-mass do not know about the law which is their right as sanctioned by the government.
Speakers said that for open and democratic society, reducing poverty, curbing corruption and enhancing transparency enforcement and practice of right to information is very important where foreign investment and public procurement form a huge chunk in less developed countries is customary like us.
It was disclosed in the meeting that after enactment of the law so far TIB and other NGOs received 218 complaints about non supplying information by some service rendering organizations in this district.
Speakers laid emphasis on the appointment of Designated Officers in all offices and need to publicised it widely.
DC Umme Salma Tanzia in her speech said that information is power to ensure transparency and accountability for eliminating corruption from our country. Information in any form must be true which would help to remove corruption from the society, she said.
She urged upon the attending persons in the meeting to feed her with information about her own office or even offices at the upazilla levels so that she can take appropriate action to ameliorate the sufferings of the people. She also said that it was a bold step of the present government.
ADM Md. Eradul Haque, stressed the need for the change of outlook and mind set of both service rendering offices and service receivers for the success of the law.
