The corporate sector needs to play a more effective role in disaster risk reduction. When constructing a building, it is necessary to comply with the overall guidelines including the building code, says a press release.
In a workshop on ‘Disaster Management Plan Finalization and Resource Mobilization’ the discussants were focusing these issues at a hotel in the capital on Wednesday, June 9. They added that multisectoral engagement is needed to deal with both natural and man-made disasters. Combinations of all organizations, including government, private, semi-government and autonomous organizations, especially through community engagement, can protect against major risks, says a press release.
Speaking as the chief guest at the workshop organized by ‘ Strengthening Urban Resilience Project (SURP)-2’ of Community Participation and Development (CPD), Md. Selim Reza also Chief Execurive Officer and Additional Secretary of Dhaka North City Corporation said, “We are always facing disaster. Civil responsibility is a big issue outside the forces that the state has deployed to deal with this disaster. In particular, the responsibility of each of us to prevent human-made disasters is undeniable.” He added that in the event of a natural disaster, as many people die due to lack of rescue efforts.
Also present on the occasion were Dhaka North City Corporation Secretary (Joint Secretary) Rabindra Sri Barua, Md. Mostak Hussain, Director (Humanitarian Programme), Save the Children in Bangladesh, officials from various government and non-government organizations and dignitaries including Councilors of Dhaka North City Corporation.
Drafts of Disaster Management Plan (Risk Reduction Action Plan and Contingency Plan) of wards 29, 30, 32 and 34 of Dhaka North City Corporation were prepared in collaboration with the project. Through today’s workshop, the draft disaster management plan for 4 wards would be reviewed through expert opinions on finalization and implementation: finalized at the city corporation level.
Community Participation and Development (CPD) ‘s Strengthening Urban Resilience Project (SURP)-2 is being implemented in Dhaka North City Corporation and Narayanganj City Corporation with funding from European Union Civil Protection and Humnitarian aid Operations (ECHO) and technical support from Save the Children in Bangladesh.
