The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the coronavirus “may never go away”.
“This virus may never go away,” WHO emergencies director Dr Michael Ryan said in a press briefing Wednesday.
Without a vaccine, he said it could take years for the global population to build up sufficient levels of immunity.
“I think it’s important to put this on the table,”
Dr Michael Ryan said. “This virus may become just another endemic virus in our communities,” he said, noting that other previously novel diseases like HIV have never disappeared, but that effective treatments have been developed.
The global death toll from coronavirus has stood at 298,165 as of Thursday morning.
Besides, it has so far infected 4,428,236 people around the world, according to data compiled by Worldometer.
Currently, 2,472,248 confirmed COVID-19 patients are being treated and 45,920 of them are in serious or critical condition.
So far 1,657,905 patients have recovered from the deadly disease.
