Corona hit poor blessed with PM’s Eid gifts through MFS

When millions of people are facing very hard time for the ongoing lock down, Prime Minister’s cash support-Tk 1250 crore to a huge number of poor family has sparked light at the end of tunnel.
Ripon Borua, a day-labourer of Hathazari upzila now at a local hospital with severe stomach pain is one of five million poor people who got Tk 25000 as Eid-gifts through his bKash account on Monday. “I forgot my pain at least for a whisker of time after receiving the PM’s Eid gift and found light at the end of tunnel”, he said.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the disbursement of Tk1,250 crore on May 14 in cash assistance for poor families hit hard by the ongoing Covid-19 lockdown.
“I don’t know how I can express my gratitude to our prime minister”, Ripon said over phone from his hospital bed with the help of his wife Sebi Borua.
“I was excited immediately after my bKash account sparked. I never thought the money would really reach to my hands so quickly without any hassle and harassment,” Md Mohiuddin, another day labour residing at Amanbazar of Hathazari under Chattogram district told this correspondent.
Azizul Dorji, a riksha driver at Matlab upzila under Chandpur district also received Eid gift from the Prime Minister’s relief fund. “I When I was performing fasting without eating any shehry food, suddenly I received Tk 2500 in my bKash account. I don’t know how to express gratitude to our Prime Minister and thank to bkash for delivering money without fee”, he said.
The Eid bonus given by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina are being disbursed through 4 mobile phone-based financial service providers (MFS) with 15 lakh families with bKash, the leading MFS operator of the country. Rocket and Sure Cash will disburse money to 10 lakh and 6 lakh families respectively.
Suraiyya Begum, a 50-year old widow residing at Rajshahi has opened bKash account recently after her grandson informed that Prime Minister will send Eid gift directly to her hand. “It’s really a milestone in our history that our prime minister has responded us quickly in our bad days with cash delivered quickly without middlemen. Her generosity knows no bounds”, she said over phone.
People particularly poor women are more worried about being able to feed their families than they are about the coronavirus. Salma Akter, a mother of three children residing at Khilgaon area in the capital city is one of them. Hailed from of Rangpur, a pocket of country’s extreme poverty, Salma has been feeding her children and her sick husband delivering meals at a restaurant in Motihjeel area for last three years.
“We are passing very dad days with no foods. All restaurants are closed, so I have to begging taka in the street”.
Salma informed that she has received Tk 2500 Eid Gift through his mobile phone account. “Thanks to our Prime Minister, gratitude to bKash”, she said with a smile.
The coronavirus outbreak has turned the country into a dead state. For Ripon Barua and Aziz Dorji, surviving here has now become a day-to-day struggle. Prime Minister’s Eid gift delivered through mobile banking channels almost without cash out fee is a big lift and big hope for millions of poor people who are hit hard by coronavirus pandemic and struggling to survive.
Here, the role of mobile financial service (MFS) operators like bKash, Rocket, Nagod and SureCash is indispensable. For PM’s Eid-gift disbursement, bKash has subsidized Tk 31.25 per Tk 2500 taka grant for 1.5 million beneficiaries.
For RMG worker’s salary disbursement, bKash subsidized Tk 10.50 per 1000 Taka for .9 million workers. BKash alone has subsidized 20 crore Taka so far by providing free cash out up to BDT 1000 and for providing free p2p to purchase medicine.
