The Bangladesh Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR) has said that the world pandemic coronavirus has changed genes 590 times in Bangladesh.
The information was given at a meeting on the genome sequencing project of 300 samples of coronavirus adopted by BCSIR on Sunday.
The meeting was held at 11 am at the BCSIR office of the Science Lab in the capital.
The Genomic Research Laboratory In Charge and Director of the project Md. Selim Khan said, “The results were obtained by analyzing the sequences of 171 cases.”
He said, “Coronavirus mutated 273 times at protein levels and changed 38 spikes.”
The organization has analyzed data so far 222 genome sequences, said the briefing.
However, the BCSIR has also identified D614G as the main cause of coronavirus infection in the country.
Besides, the virus inactivates beneficial bacteria in the human body.
Science and Technology Minister Architect Yafesh Osman was the chief guest at the function presided over by BCSIR Acting Chairman Md. Shawkat Ali. Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Science and Technology Anwar Hossain and Director of the National Institute of Laboratory Medicine and Referral Center, AKM Shamsuzzaman were present as the guest.
So far 67,524 genome sequence data on coronavirus have published the scientists around the world at the Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data (GISAID).
Of these, 173 coronavirus genome sequence have been sent from Bangladesh.
It is understood that the coronavirus of Bangladesh is more intensive than the virus of Italy, said the briefing.
The Project Director Md. Selim Khan said, “A study by BCSIR scientists found that the coronavirus in Bangladesh had already undergone more than 590 changes in its genetic level and more than 273 changes in its protein level.”
