Bangladesh’s coronavirus cases are escalating alarmingly as number of infections rolled to 23,870 with the detection of 1,602 new cases in the last 24 hours.
The country also recorded the highest 21 deaths from Covid-19 in the same period, raising the total death toll to 349, Professor Dr Nasima Sultana, Additional Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), said it in a regular press briefing in Dhaka.
Dr. Sultana said, “42 labs across the country tested 9,788 samples, where we found the highest number of patients infected and died in the last 24 hours till Monday morning.”
The DGHS official said, “Twelve of the deceased are from Dhaka division, seven from Chattogram division, one from Sylhet division and one from Rajshahi division.”
Dr. Sultana described the district-wise death toll saying six died in Dhaka City, two in Dhaka district, two each in Chattogram, Cumilla and Chattogram City Corporations area and Feni, one each in Gopalganj, Munshiganj, Tangail, Manikganj, Noakhali and Sylhet and another in Bogura district.
In the last 24 hours, she said, 212 Covid-19 patients have recovered. With this, 4,575 people have recovered in the country so far, Dr. Sultana said.
As per the ratio of total number of detected cases, she said, the recovery rate is 19.21 percent and mortality rate 1.46 percent in the country.
She said that, among the deceased, one was between 11 and 20 years of age, two between 31 and 40, six between 41 and 50, eight between 51 and 60 and five between 61 and 70, Dr Nasima said about the age-based statistics of the deceased.
Dr. Sultana said 231 more people were taken to isolation in the last 24 hours across the country.
Bangladesh confirmed the first COVID-19 case on March 8 and the first death on March 18. The country passed 72nd day on Monday.
Since the 10th week, the number of infections along with death records increased significantly in the country.
The DGHS official said that among the 21 new deaths, four died at their residences, two were brought dead and 15 died at hospitals.
As per the records, it was the first incident that any COVID-19 patient died at home or outside hospital.
Meanwhile, many people died with COVID-19 symptoms without tests. Twelve of the deaths occurred in Dhaka division.
