Coriander cultivators happy over bumper output in Barind tract

 Coriander cultivators of vast Barind tract happy over bumper output in this season due to favourable weather condition and timely supply of necessary agri-input.
The growers were taking care at the cropland in a view to get a satisfactory production and good profit, said farmer Selim Uddin, 54, under Khetlal upazila of Joypurhat district. He again said, they are also very much optimistic about good market price.
According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) the crops has growm well elsewhere the district as the farmers had taken a strong initiative to make the programme a grand success. DAE has provided all sort of necessary agri-input when the farmers sowed the seed of the crops. In a recent visit the correspondent found the farmers were passing busy time to provide water, fertilizer, and pesticide across the area. The dense fog boosts the expected yield in the season compare to previous year. The coriander filed is full with green leaf.
“I have brought over 23 decimal of land under the spice cultivation in this season spending Tk 4300,” said farmer Abudir Rahman Dulal, 24, under Mohadebpur upazila of Naogaon. He also said, “I am expecting to make over Tk 93000 as profit from the crop land.”
Farmer can achieve more than six to seven maunds of coriander from each bigh of land investing Tk 10000 if the weather condition remains favourable till harvesting period. Each maund of the spice is being sold from Tk 6500 to 8600 in the retail markets according to quality.
Getting repeated good profit previous year, good number peasants of the Barind tract have emphasized on coriander farming this season. To boost the production of the crops Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) has taken elaborate programme elsewhere the area. The farming is increasing day by day due tout lucrative profit.
Now, each KG of fresh coriander is being sold from Tk 240 to 250 in the retail market while Tk 230 to 235 in the wholesale markets. To produce a KG of spice farmers are spending Tk 150 to 200 but they will sell them from Tk 240 to 250.
The farmers are using both chemical fartilser and organic fartilser to render the production this season according tie the suggestion of local agriculture officers. The authority concern has provided quality seed in a very small cost.
“I have cultivated some 12 decimal of corinder in my own crop land spending Tk 9200 this season with Assistance of Block Supervisor Azizur Rahman,” said farmer Aslam Hossain, Boraigram Upazila under Natore district.
