Staff Reporter :
The country’s police force has completely gone under the political control. The situation will worsen if a (police) commission is not formed, former adviser of a caretaker government Dr Akbar Ali Khan said this while speaking at a discussion held at the National Press Club
 in the city on Saturday.
The discussion was organised by Humanity Foundation marking the seventh year of separation of judiciary.
Dr Akbar Ali Khan also suggested for enacting a separate law to control police.
Referring to annual police report, he said, among the total charge-sheeted accused, only 23-24 per cent has been convicted. But, the number of ejahars (FIRs) was not included in the statistics.
“The number of conviction would not exceed even 10 per cent, if the number of ejahars is counted; it indicates the country has turned into a sanctuary of criminals,” he commented.
Suggesting revision of the existing British law, Akbar Ali said, “The (British) law is still existing in the country which is faulty. Constitutional amendment alone is not enough to change the legal system.”
Separation of judiciary will not be enough to establish people’s rights of justice. If we want to make our judiciary effective, we need to amend CRPC (Code of Criminal Procedure), evidence act, Police act, Khan viewed.
Prothom Alo Joint Editor Mizanur Rahman Khan, former Bangladesh Bank Governor Salehuddin Ahmed, Former National Human Rights Commission Chairman Justice Amirul Kabir Chowdhury, among others also spoke at the function.
The discussants viewed that undue interference from the executive must be stopped to ensure independent judiciary.
Earlier last month, National Human Rights Commission Chairman Dr Mizanur Rahman said the chain of command of police administration has broken down, resulting in slide in human rights and law and order situations.
