A section of police have allegedly been taking bribe from many innocent people by planting evidence of false charges against them with possession of contraband drug like yaba, cannabis and wine across the country.
Many a people have already become victims of such immoral activities of some unscrupulous members of law enforcing agencies, intelligence sources said.
Thousands of people are passing their days in fear of the alleged ‘drug pushing trap’ in the name of checking of bodies and raiding houses by the law enforcers, they added.
Some members of Police, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Bangladesh Cost Guard (BCG) are also allegedly involved with drug business and smuggling, the intelligence sources alleged.
The law enforcers are also involved in illegal drug trading and sometimes they sold the seized contraband drug, the sources claimed.
Even some lawmakers, leaders and activists and some transport leaders are also involved with the illegal drug business in the country.
At least 150 Police personnel were punished for their involvement with the illegal drug trading in the last year, Police Headquarters sources said.
The high-ups of the force are investigating the incident of ‘cops drug pushing trap’ during raids, they said.
A total of 216,398 drug-related cases are awaiting trial throughout the country, with the long delays leading to many accused peddlers being granted bail and returning to their illegal trade, said a report of Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) to the Ministry of Home Affairs.
About 46,214 of the cases were filed by the DNC while the rest were filed by law enforcement agencies, BGB and BCG, the DNC report said.
The cases were filed against suspects on charges of possessing narcotic substances such as cocaine, phensedyl, yaba, heroin, locally brewed alcohol, cannabis and drug injections, it added.
On Wednesday, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) detained Nazmul Kabir, deputy director of Department of Narcotics Control (DNC), with Tk 2 lakh bribe in Jessore
Mostafizur Rahman, Primary and Mass Education Minister, apparently frustrated by increasing addiction to and trade with drugs in society and said shooting at sight should be used as means to stop this social menace.
“Those who are involved in the drug trade should be shot at sight since as narcotics has been the country’s number one problem,” he said.
DNC director general Mohammod Jamal Uddin Ahmed said that they want to strengthen operational activities of the anti-drug watchdog in line with anti-drug control bodies abroad.
“Drug traders and smugglers are more powerful, and they always use modern arms and ammunition. But our personnel are conducting operations without arms as they are not entitled to use arms. Our employees are risking their lives while working. And that’s why sometimes they cannot conduct drives against drug traders. We will be able to arrest drug traders if our teams use arms during operation,” he said.
The DG also said that the DNC will buy drug detector machine soon.
Abdul Alim, Deputy Inspector General (Media) of Police Headquarters, said, “Police remain zero tolerance over drug issue and award punishment to those cops involved with this immoral drug trading.”
Police have ensured the criminal and departmental cases against the involved police members while only criminal cases are filed people illegal drug trading.
A drug peddler said that police informed them about the DNC’s anti-drug drive in advance. The informers of police take money and provide necessary instructions to deal the drug business.
Zafor Mia, a shopkeeper in Hazaribagh, claimed that a police team raided his shop and nothing found illegal there. They pushed 15 pieces of yaba tablets in pocket and took me at police station. I escaped from the police by paying Tk 10,000.
