Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia on Wednesday said they have made a good progress in the investigation into the Kalabagan double murder as they recovered some important evidence in this connection.
Speaking at a programme at the DMP headquarters marking the handover of keys of three pickups donated by Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited to the DMP, he, however, declined to elaborate it, saying they will come up with details soon.
Asaduzzaman Mia also termed the double murder a sporadic incident and urged the city dwellers not to get panicked. “We’ve found some significant information and evidence over the double murder. We can’t disclose those now for the sake of investigation,” he said. A group of 5-7 criminals stabbed USAID staff Xulhaz Mannan, 35, and his friend Mahbub Tanoy, 36, an activist of theater group Loknatya Dal, at an apartment in Kalabagan area on Monday, killing them on the spot.
Asaduzzaman Mia said efficient police officers are investigating the double murder to track down the killers and unearth the reason behind the sensational killings. “We’ll be able to debunk the mystery behind the murders, and bring the perpetrators to justice. But, we need some time,” he added.
The DMP commissioner claimed that traditional crime like stealing, robbery and mugging is now under their control in the capital. He, however, said the recent ‘planned’ killings are obviously a matter of concern. Asaduzzaman Mia said 21 cases were filed with different police stations across the country in connection with militant activities, including the murders of bloggers and publishers, over a few years. Of the cases, 11 were filed with different police stations under the DMP, and the verdict of blogger Rajib Haider killing case has already been delivered.
Investigators have also made a remarkable progress in their probe into blogger Ovijit and publisher Dipan murders. “We’ve already got the names of the killers and their addresses. Of them, one or two have fled the country,” he added.
The DMP commissioner urged the city dwellers to come forward and help police fight against terrorism and militancy. He also said police could have arrested the killers of Xulhaz and Tanoy had local people helped the police officer who was injured while trying to catch them after the incident.
