BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia along with the leaders and workers of her party on Friday celebrated her 69th birthday through cutting cakes and holding different other programmes.
In celebration of her birthday, Khaleda Zia cut a cake at her Gulshan office at 12.01am. Afterward, the party leaders conveyed their compliments to her offering bouquets of flowers wishing her long life. The party’s standing committee members and senior leaders were present at the time. Former DU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Emajuddin Ahmed and former CEC Justice Abdur Rouf also took part in the function.
Besides, the cover of a CD of songs made by Jatiyatabadi Samajik Sangskritik Sangstha (JASAS) was unveiled by Khaleda Zia after cutting the cake. She also cut another cake in the office.
Of the cakes, one was presented by the BNP and the other by Dhaka city unit of the party. BNP and its front bodies celebrated the birthday in several parts of the city and across the country amid various programmes.
Dhaka city unit of the BNP, Juba Dal, Swechchhasebak Dal, Mohila Dal, Sramik Dal and Chhatra Dal were scheduled to cut birthday cakes and hold discussions at Nayapaltan office. But, police obstructed their programme. Police cordoned off the office and did not allow anyone to hold function there.
BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed at a press briefing at the office alleged that the law enforcing agencies cordoned off the office in a bid to put country’s one of the largest parties in a cage. The law enforcers did not allow anyone to enter or leave the office since Thursday night. Police were directed to arrest the BNP men if they try to enter or come out of the office, he added.
A huge number of law enforcers, including policemen in plain clothes, were also deployed around the party office. Water cannon and police vehicles also remained stationed in front of the office.
Meanwhile, leaders and workers of party and its front bodies held several other programmes to celebrate the birthday in several other parts of the city and across the country. Bogra district unit of the BNP celebrated Khaleda Zia’s birthday in a festive mood.
